Pessumal’s historic PBA performance ends in flames
The sharp-shooting guard sets a new PBA record of most three-pointers without a miss in a game

ANTIPOLO CITY, Philippines – Everything went right for Von Pessumal as juggernauts San Miguel and TNT clashed in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Except the win.

Pessumal saw his record-setting PBA performance of most three-pointers without a miss in a game go down the drain after the Beermen absorbed a 97-110 loss to the KaTropa on Saturday, June 8.

The sharp-shooting guard shot an immaculate 8-of-8 from rainbow country to set a new career-high of 24 points, but not even his perfect game could propel San Miguel to its first win.

“I hate to repeat myself but I’d rather get the win and score zero. But that’s how it is,” Pessumal told reporters after the game.

Unconscious from long range, Pessumal broke the previous record of 6-of-6 from deep shared by 8 players, notably Glenn Capacio (twice), Renren Ritualo and Dondon Hontiveros.

“I just come to the game and have the mindset to play the right way, if I’m open I’ll shoot it. Actually, I didn’t even know that I didn’t miss.”

“When I play, I don’t really give much thought when I miss. I was surprised to see my production in the box score. I was lucky today,” he added in a mix of Filipino and English.

Despite the Beermen going down 0-2, Pessumal trusts they have the experience to turn their fortunes around in their hunt to reclaim the mid-season conference championship they won two years ago.

“These guys are champions, I’m just new here, I’m learning from them. They know how to turn this thing around. And if I recall, we also started bad last year, same conference,” he said of a 0-3 start last year.

“So there’s still hope. We still have 9 more games. If we win most of our games, I think we’re still in. So always look at the positives.”

San Miguel shoots for its maiden win against league-leading Blackwater at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday, June 14. Rappler.com
