Lim replaces Agustin as Ginebra coach – report

MANILA, Philippines – Following their quarterfinals elimination at the hands of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is reportedly set to make another coaching change by promoting Assistant Coach Frankie Lim to take over the head coach position. 

A report by Philippine Star on Monday, March 30 says that Lim is set to take over for Ato Agustin, who replaced former Ginebra coach Jeff Cariaso just before the start of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.  

The team went 5-7 under Agustin in the second conference.

Lim was the coach of the San Beda Red Lions in the NCAA, where he won four championships with the school in 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011.  

Lim resigned in 2012, just before he was set to serve a two-year ban from the NCAA for getting involved in a brawl with then San Sebastian College-Recoletos volleyball head coach Roger Gorayeb. 

Phil Star also reports that there have been trade talks involving players of Ginebra, with Chris Ellis and LA Tenorio’s names popping out as candidates. 

Rappler reached out to Tenorio, who was surprised by the news and admitted he hadn’t heard of a coaching change. 

Rappler also reached out to Ginebra assistant coach Olsen Racela, who said he doesn’t “know anything about that.”  

Racela also mentioned that the team is currently on a week-long break and will resume practice on Monday, April 6 – the day the coaching change is expected to be announced. 

Rappler tried reaching out to Ginebra big man Greg Slaughter and Agustin, but calls to both were unanswered.
