Pacquiao hits at Donaire’s work ethic: ‘don’t be lazy’

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao, who just recently won the WBO welterweight championship once again after defeating Jessie Vargas via unanimous decision in Las Vegas, criticized co-Filipino fighter Nonito Donaire Jr for his work ethic.

“Don’t be lazy and always go hard in training,” Pacquiao said to the fighter known as “The Filipino Flash,” according to The Manila Times.

Donaire fought in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Vargas pay-per-view, losing his WBO super bantamweight title via unanimous decision to Jessie Magdaleno.

“In boxing, you cannot take your training lightly and you can’t be lazy,” said Pacquiao. “You have to train hard and wisely. Boxing is no joke.”

Pacquiao also said that he’s hopeful Donaire will train better if he wants to make up for his defeat.

“Whoever your trainer is if you don’t train seriously, you’ll end up with nothing. “I’m hoping he’ll train seriously if he’s determined to come back.”

Donaire actually believed he won the fight against Magdaleno, saying “I thought I got control in the second half of the fight. Losing never really crossed my mind. This is unbelievable,” to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Pacquiao, however, disagrees.

“Magdaleno is an Olympian (editor’s note: Magdaleno did not compete at the Olympics), a good undefeated fighter and hungry. Donaire took his opponent for granted and I don’t know why. His footwork was heavy, no air and there’s no timing,” said the 8-division boxing champion, who’s also a Philippine senator. – Rappler.com
