MANILA, Philippines – Bernadette Pons proved to be too unstoppable as Far Eastern University trounced San Sebastian College in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 First Conference on Tuesday, March 25 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Tamaraws’ super rookie fired 21 points on a variety of spikes to lead the Morayta-based squad to a 25-21, 20-25, 25-11, 25-20 victory.

Teams traded bombs in the first two sets before Pons led a third-set rally for FEU, seizing a 9-2 start before finishing it quickly at 25-11.

Lady Stag Gretchel Soltones then twisted her left foot in the fourth set that aggravated coach Roger Gorayeb’s woes as San Sebastian fell in 4 sets.

FEU played sans main setter Gyselle Sy but it did not stop them from dominating the Stags especially in the latter part of the match.

“Even before we joined the V-League, we already had a game plan anticipating the absence of Gyselle Sy,” FEU head coach Shaq Delos Santos said, lauding setter Yna Papa who finished with 30 excellent sets.

Gretchel Soltones and guest player Maru Banaticla led SSC-R with 17 and 15, respectively.

Southwestern U denies St. Louis in thriller

In the curtain-raiser, Southwestern University went back-and-forth with St. Louis University of Baguio before surviving in a thrilling five-set affair.

The Lady Cobras of Cebu blew a 2-1 lead but managed to recover late in the match for a 25-20, 23-25, 25-15, 21-25, 19-17 triumph.

Down 12-14 in the final set, SWU rallied back behind middle hitter Marilyn Llagoso who topscored with 19 points including 8 blocks.

“I told my girls to just give their best because they’re mostly beginners,” said SWU head coach Jordan Paca after the win.

“Competition here in Manila is different. I told them if they want to win, keep playing.”

The Lady Cobras of Cebu are making their second appearance in the tournament while the Lady Navigators of Baguio are in their maiden V-League appearance.
