Ateneo’s De Jesus hit with eye infection, misses San Sebastian match
De Jesus was rushed to the hospital this morning due to bleeding and pain in her left eye

MANILA, Philippines — Ella De Jesus sat out the Ateneo Lady Eagles’ match against the San Sebastian Lady Stags due to an eye infection on Sunday, July 19 in the Shakey’s V-League 12 Collegiate Conference.

De Jesus, who played her final year for Ateneo last season, was rushed to the hospital this morning as her left eye was hurting and bleeding. The diagnosis, according to the courtside report, was preseptal infection and hemorrhagic conjunctivitis.

Wearing a patch, De Jesus said she will need 3 to 4 days to recover and is already taking medication. She admitted the infected eye is painful.

“I need to rest for a while. Maybe I can play the next game,” said De Jesus, who is suiting up for the Lady Eagles this V-League conference as a guest player.

With De Jesus and Kat Tolentino (ACL injury) out Sunday, team captain and star player Alyssa Valdez made an unexpected debut and contributed 5 points in a straight-set win that hiked the Lady Eagles’ record to 2-0 in group B.

Valdez was supposed to rest this tournament after a hectic playing schedule the entire year.

De Jesus tallied 18 excellent digs and 13 receptions in an opening day win over UST last Saturday, July 11.

Ateneo’s next game is on Sunday, July 26 against rival school De La Salle University-Dasmariñas. — Rappler.com
