Former Gilas Pilipinas coach Rajko Toroman says Kai Sotto made a wise decision by joining the National Basketball League in Australia

Playing in Australia is the most optimal decision for Kai Sotto.

Former Gilas Pilipinas head coach Rajko Toroman had this to say as the 7-foot-3 Filipino big man signed with the Adelaide 36ers of the National Basketball League in Australia.

“I think it is a great move,” Toroman told the Power and Play with Noli Eala program of Radyo Singko.

Sotto joined the 36ers after his stint with Ignite in the NBA G League did not pan out as he parted ways with the team even before he saw action in an official game with the squad.

“I think the G League is too strong for this moment for Kai Sotto. He is not athletic enough for the G League,” Toroman said.

Toroman noted that Sotto will develop better in Australia than in the G League, where he said players chasing NBA deals want to showcase their individual skills to attract attention.

“It is a league for small players because everybody of them are looking for NBA contracts and they do not give the ball to the big guys too much,” the Serbian mentor said.

“The Australian league is a great league,” Toroman added. “Very strong league with excellent domestic players. I think that is the best move at this moment for Kai Sotto.”

Toroman also gave his thumbs up to Thirdy Ravena as he signed a multi-year contract with the San-En NeoPhoenix in the Japan B. League.

Sidelined for the majority of the previous season due to the coronavirus and injuries, Ravena is expected to play a more significant role for the NeoPhoenix in the coming years.

“His experience in Japan will help him grow into the next level and help the national team,” Toroman said. – Rappler.com
