Alaska sweeps Ginebra to win 14th PBA title

MANILA, Philippines — Alaska snapped a three-year title drought after zooming past Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the fourth quarter to win, 104-80, and sweep the crowd favorites in the 2013 PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals Sunday, May 19.

After trailing for most of the game, the Aces dropped a 33-6 bomb in the final period, erasing a three-point deficit, building a 96-79 bubble with 3:03 left on the clock and finishing their foes off with another 8-1 run in front of more than 24, 000 fans at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Finals MVP Sonny Thoss sparked the romp, banging in six points as Alaska pushed themselves ahead, 84-78, with 6:31 remaining. 

Point guard JV Casio then added to the Kings’ woes as he scored eight straight points off two jumpers and a four-point play to push the Aces to a 92-79 advantage.

Thoss scored again before Abueva hit three consecutive layups as Alaska sealed the title and the sweep, 100-80.

Best Import Robert Dozier, who was presented with the award before the game, put on an awe-inspiring performance with 27 points, 20 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 blocks while Casio scored 18 markers.

Calvin Abueva, who finished second in the Best Player of the Conference voting, added 22 points and 10 boards while Thoss had 13 points and 14 rebounds.

The win — the Aces’ fifth straight against Barangay Ginebra in the conference — led to Alaska’s 14th overall championship and the first since the 2010 Fiesta Conference.
