DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — “I don’t want to play volleyball again.”

Those were the words of SOCCSKSARGEN spiker Bhetaney Soliva after figuring in a gruesome injury during a match against Western Visayas in the 2013 Palarong Pambansa here.

“I was really hurt so I really cried because of the pain,” Soliva told Rappler after undergoing an x-ray examination at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital.

The 16-year-old landed on the foot of a teammate after going for a block, crumbling to the ground as she writhed in pain and her blood splattered on the Foundation University gym floor.

Action was halted and tournament officials declared the match forfeited while Soliva was hurriedly brought to the hospital, where doctors deemed her injury a sprained left ankle.

“Her injury involved laceration of wound, approximately 1 centimeter that’s why there was blood, said Dr. Mark Aranas, Soliva’s attending physician.

Aranas added that it will take a week for the SOCCSKSARGEN volleybelle to recover, ruling out a return to the Palaro wars, where her team is mired in a 0-2 hole.

The injury and her subsequent decision to “retire” from the sport shatters Soliva’s dreams of playing in Manila, where she had hoped of trying out for the Technological Institute of the Philippines squad.

“This is my first time to play in the Palaro and yet I got injured,” she said. “I don’t want to play volleyball again.” – with reports from Jan Carlo Gavile/Rappler.com
