CESAFI: Green Lancers defeat Webmasters, move to 3-0

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers took the top post of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) collegiate division after winning all 3 of its games so far.

The latest team to fall victim to the 10-time champion is the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 77-62, Sunday, August 9 at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Green Lancers continued to lead the ballgame on double digits from the end of the first half by converting 9 of 16 gift shots in the final quarter.

Former RP Youth member Leonard Santillan figured prominently by scoring 13 points, pulling down 6 rebounds and sinking 5 of his 6 free throws.

Santillan made his presence felt from the start of the ballgame by combining with Alwin Aguirre and Steve Cedrick Akomo to limit the Webmasters to just 13 points in the opening canto, and allowing the Green Lancers to enjoy a 9-point lead going into the second quarter.

UV stretched its advantage over UC to 14 points at halftime, 41-27, this time with Vincent Mendoza scoring 3 of the 9 baskets that the Green Lancers scored in the second quarter.

The Webmasters seemed to have awakened at the start of the second half with Justine Dacalos converting one of his charities, and Peter Paul Codilla sinking a triple to bring down the Green Lancers’ lead to 10.

Yet with Santillan and Aguirre back in the game after taking a rest, it seemed that nothing could go wrong for the Green Lancers as they came back stronger and even led as much as 16 points, 53-37, in the middle of the third canto.

Back-to-back treys from Joseph Daniel Mayol and Dacalos allowed the Webmasters to stay within 12 points of the Green Lancers, 55-43.

The Green Lancers had their accuracy from the line to thank as it allowed them to stretch their lead further over the Webmasters despite 3 treys each from Melvin Butohan, Clint Suelto and Dacalos.

UV eventually enjoyed a sizeable 15-point advantage over UC, 77-62, at the final buzzer.

The loss dropped the UC Webmasters to just one win and now two losses.

The second collegiate match of the day had the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers getting lambasted by last season’s first runner-up University of San Carlos (USC Warriors), 64-88.

Interestingly enough, the comebacking USPF is also the first team to have a player do 4 hours of community service in Jawein Ceniza, who was called for two unsportsmanlike fouls, first against Giovanni Laguyo in the first quarter, and Shooster Olago in the third quarter, which got him ejected from the game.

This season, CESAFI officials have decided that aside from the one game suspension and the fine of P5,000 ($109.17), an erring player must also render community service to learn from the experience. This will also serve as a deterrent for others not to commit unsportsmanlike fouls.

The Panthers had tied the Warriors at 18-all at the opening quarter behind the efforts of  Kino Matthews Bajamunde and Winston Bolivar and even took a 6-point lead halfway at 12-6.

Olago though immediately found his rhythm dominating the board all throughout. Another Warrior who added to the Panthers’ woes was Kevin Oleodo who scored thrice from the arc in the final canto.

USC’s Ian Jefferson Tagapan was named player of the game with his 5 rebounds and 13 points.

USC now enjoys a 2-0 win-loss record while USPF has yet to barge into the win column with its 0-2 win-loss card so far.

In the juniors division, defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles clinched its second win in as many games with a 72-47 domination of the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CIT-U) Wildkittens.

Andrew Vincent Velasco impressed with 7 straight points in the dying seconds of the final canto to the consternation of the Wildkittens. 

Named best player was Eroll Pastor who not only scored 14 points but also had 9 rebounds and one assist.

In the second game, the USPF Baby Panthers finally posted its first win with a 93-68 demolition of the UC Junior Webmasters.

The Baby Panthers flashed the form that saw them finished third last season by leading all throughout the ballgame. 

The closest that UC came against USPF was at the end of the first quarter at 12-16.

Ain Carlo Obenza waxed hot with a total of 30 points including 6 treys out of 10 tries and 4 rebounds.
