Subido fires 30 as UST bows out with a win

MANILA, Philippines – Renzo Subido erupted for 30 points as University of Santo Tomas survived a late scare to edge out Arellano University, 82-73, in the 12th FilOil Preseason Cup on Friday, June 15 at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Subido, who also dished out 5 assists, shot 6-of-14 from beyond the arc and nailed a 4-point play with just 6.6 seconds remaining to help seal the win for the UST Growling Tigers.

Despite the victory, however,  the Tigers bowed out with a 2-6 record. 

Marvin Lee poured in 17 points while Kenneth Zamora, too, caught fire from deep, hitting 3 of his 6 attempts all in the second half to finish with 9 points for UST.

The Tigers barely survived a 4th-quarter meltdown as the Chiefs erased an 11-point deficit to tie the game at 71 with 1:45 remaining. Arellano held UST to just one field goal in the quarter until the 3:30 mark.

Levi Dela Cruz led Arellano with 16 points, while Michael Canete contributed a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Rence Alcoriza and Adrian Alban scored 10 points each to round out the double-digit scorers for the Chiefs.

In juniors action, Mapua pounced on a La Salle Green Hills side that played minus a key cog to hammer out a 99-89 triumph.

The Red Robins scored in bunches in the third quarter as they uncorked a 13-4 run en route to a 62-58 lead that the Greenies never recovered from.

Clint Escamis had an all-around effort of 19 points to go with 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals to lift the Robins past the Greenies, who had been playing minus standout Joel Cagulangan.

Dan Arches also fired 18 points and Roseller Sarias had 15 on a 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Karl Mariano and Paolo Hernandez chipped in 13 points apiece, while big man Briedyn Smith registered 16 rebounds for the Robins.

Three-point shooting was the order of the day with both teams hitting a collective 21 threes. Jacob Cortez’s clutch 3-pointer gave LSGH a slim 50-49 lead heading into halftime, but timely threes kept Arellano in the game, eventually handing them their biggest lead, 92-76, after a corner shot from Sarias.

Joshua David carried the load for the Greenies, scoring 28 points on a 70% shooting from 3-point range aside from grabbing 8 rebounds.

Inand Fornillos scored a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Jacob Cortez and Sydney Mosqueda scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
