PCCL: Belo, Tolomia star in FEU's win over Arellano
MANILA, Philippines – During the recent men's basketball tournament of the UAAP, it were Mac Belo and Mike Tolomia who stepped up countless of times for the FEU Tamaraws in their run to the finals.
That was the case once again on Friday, November 21, when the FEU stars came up with critical plays to lead their team past the Arellano University Chiefs, 84-72, at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The win improved FEU's record in the Elite Eight round of the 2014 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) to 1-1, while the loss sent Arellano down to 1-2.
Belo finished with 23 points, while Tolomia scored 16. They also received help from the likes of Carl Cruz and Raymar Jose, who contributed 15 and 7 markers, respectively.
Belo scored 13 of his 23 points in the final quarter, but it was Tolomia's personal 9-0 run that put the game away for the Tamaraws, who will look to improve to 2-1 when they take on the DLSU Green Archers on Monday, November 24.
Tolomia's scoring spurt put his team ahead by 15, 73-58 a little over midway through the fourth period, which was enough of a threshold to keep the Chiefs at bay for the rest of the game.
Leading the Chiefs was Jiovani Jalalon, who filled up the stat sheet with 26 points (on 11-of-20 shooting), 9 assists, and 3 rebounds. Reigning NCAA Rookie of the Year Dioncee Holts finished with 14 points and 6 boards.
As a team, FEU shot 40% from the field despite going just 5-of-26 from downtown. The Tamaraws received 30 free throw attempts, and converted 25. Coach Nash Racela's boys won the turnover battle, 20-14, and scored 23 points of AU's miscues.
The Chiefs shot 41% from the field but just 19% from 3-point area.
