MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo de Manila University and National University – finalists of last year’s Shakey’s V-League first conference championship series – picked up opening day wins in contrasting styles as the 11th season of the country’s premier volleyball league kicked off on Sunday, March 23 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Ateneo 3-1 Adamson

25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24

The Best: Amy ‘Kiwi’ Ahomiro was all over the place last night, salvaging the Lady Eagles in the third set, which proved to be the game-changer. Adamson was left disheartened after blowing away a 15-10 edge, with the New Zealander making her presence felt. She finished with 16 points, getting the job done on defense (4 blocks), service (7 aces) and quick spikes (5 attack points)

The Worst: The Lady Falcons always led heading into the first technical timeout of each set, but blew away comfortable leads in the third (15-10) and fourth sets (18-14) that costed them the match. Coach Sherwin Meneses’ troops lacked the strong finish on opening day.

Blue Eagle Balance: The reigning UAAP champions closed out the match with four players scoring each of the last four points. Aerial Patnongon scored a terrific block on Sheila Pineda, before spikes by Alyssa Valdez, Michelle Morente, and Ella De Jesus from different directions towed Ateneo to a victory.

National U 3-0 Perpertual

25-20, 25-14, 25-15

The Best: All six of National University’s scorers tallied at least 6 markers each; Myla Pablo had 10 points, Jaja Santiago added 9, and Carmina Aganon chipped in 8. Together, Pablo and Aganon combined for 16 of NU’s 32 spikes to lift the Lady Bulldogs.

The Worst: Perpetual Help’s defense was an eyesore, letting National U get away with even the easiest of points. Their reception rate was a measly 19.7% (13/66). They also committed six more errors than Ateneo, which made matters worse.

And the better middle spiker is: Dindin Santiago, who scored a quiet 12 points to topscore for National U but sneaked in six from the service zone; her presence in the front row also made it difficult for Perpetual attackers to execute. Honey Royse Tubino meanwhile did score 17 for the Altas although she struggled to get her rhythm and take control. – Rappler.com
