Ward confirms appointment as new UP coach

MANILA, Philippines – Joe Ward confirmed that he will be the new head coach of the UP Fighting Maroons on Wednesday, March 25, during the PBA games at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Ward, who’s handled the UP team on an interim basis since the departure of former head coach Rey Madrid, will take over full-coaching duties next UAAP season, which will be hosted by the University of the Philippines.

Ward is currently coaching UP’s affiliate franchise in the Filsports Basketball Association – the Diliman Fighting Maroons.

Ward was selected among a number of candidates who applied by the select committee, which consists of Philippine Azkals and Fighting Maroons team manager Dan Palami, GlobalPort Batang Pier team consultant Pido Jarencio, UP athletic director Ariel Juliano, UP alum Bong Somera, Artemio Isidro, and Rene Balmaceda.

“ I appreciate the opportunity,” Ward said about being given the job.

“I appreciate the opportunity and I told them that it’s not one bonfire we’re looking for. Not looking for one bonfire, no.”

Ward also said that last year’s starting guard, Mikee Reyes, won’t be with the team next season despite having a year of eligibility left.

“He was released,” Ward said.

According to the new head coach, Jett Manuel will be in action again for the Fighting Maroons next season. He also said that the team’s fans should watch out for incoming freshmen Felix Jaboneta and a 6-foot-5 standout from Letran.

“I’m not looking for All-Stars, I’m looking for guys who’s going to do dirty work,” Ward said.
