Mobile Internet speeds in Korea will hit 300Mbps this year thanks to new band carrier aggregation technology

EVOLUTION. An ad for SK telecom posted on its Facebook page shows the evolution of mobile Internet speeds in South Korea.

MANILA, Philippines – Mobile Internet will get even faster in South Korea, already home to the fastest Internet speeds on the planet.

South Korean mobile carriers SK Telecom and LG U+ separately announced on Monday, January 20 the successful development of band carrier aggregation (CA) technology for their existing super high-speed LTE-Advanced networks.

The technology will enable mobile Internet speeds of up to 300Mbps by aggregating 3 frequency bands to increase bandwidth.

Both companies expect to be able to roll out the new service to consumers before the end of 2014, pending new chipsets that will allow smartphones to support the new network.

In June 2013, SK Telecom became the first telecommunications company in the world to launch an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network capable of data transfer rates of up to 150Mbps – about twice as fast as 4G LTE.

By November the company was touting download speeds of up to 225Mbps by combining two bands giving users the ability to download an 800MB movie in 28 seconds.

In June 2013, Samsung also released a special variant of the Galaxy S4 – the world’s first smartphone to support LTE-A.

SK Telecom also intends to showcase a 450Mbps LTE-Advanced band CA at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this February 2014. – Rappler.com
