Recapping Sony's PlayStation Showcase at E3 2018
MANILA, Philippines - Sony consistently puts a good show at E3 every year, often winning the crowd with reveals of their heavy-hitting first party titles. This year is no different.
At the Sony Playstation E3 2018 showcase on June 11, Monday (June 12, Tuesday Manila time), Sony pulled out all stops with the new announcements and trailers.
The Last of Us Part II
Shawn Layden, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios kicked off the Sony E3 showcase by welcoming the crowd in a tent decorated like a church. He talked about how Sony was “mixing it up” this year by putting the live crowd and the viewers right in the setting of their games.
The first gameplay footage for The Last of Us Part II comes in a scripted demo which showcases stealth, combat, and even crafting.
Ghosts of Tsushima
First announced last year, Sony debuted gameplay for Ghosts of Tsushima, a brand new IP from Sucker Punch, known for the Infamous series of games. The demo shows a bit of the sword combat and some stealth mechanics
Meanwhile, the first trailer for Control, a brand new game from Remedy – the developers behind Alan Wake and Quantum Break – was shown to the public at the event.
The trailer features a female protagonist who uses a shape-shifting gun to shoot enemies down in a similarly shape-shifting claustrophobic environment.
Control is set to release next year.
Resident Evil 2
Capcom also revealed the first look at the highly-anticipated remake of Resident Evil 2 in a trailer that features gameplay clips.
The original game is said to be getting overhauled to shift to third-person point of view seen in Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6. Players are still taking control of Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they fight to survive the zombie-infested Racoon City.
Resident Evil 2 comes out on January 25, 2019.
As expected, Kojima Productions unveiled an 8-minute trailer for Death Stranding that shows a bit of gameplay featuring exploration, stealth, and glimpses of what looks to be a massive open-world. On top of this, the new trailer introduces two new characters, one played by Lea Seydoux and the other by Lindsay Wagner. They join Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen in the game’s stellar cast.
Nioh 2, the sequel to Team Ninja’s action role-playing game released in 2017 was revealed at the showcase.
Kingdom Hearts 3
In case the previous trailers weren’t enough, a new Pirates of the Caribbean trailer for Kingdom Hearts 3 was unveiled.
It features Sora, Donald, and Goofy joining Captain Jack Sparrow and the rest of his crew for another adventure.
Finally, Spider-Man web swings his way into E3 with brand new gameplay that features popular villains including Rhino, Electro, Scorpion and Vulture. The trailer provides a better look at the combo-based combat and the web-swinging traversal mechanics players can expect from the game on September 7 this year.
Sony announced that Call of Duty Black Ops 3 will be free to Playstation Plus members tonight.
Speaking of Call of Duty Black Ops, sequel Call of Duty Black Ops 4 will feature 4 remastered multiplayer maps from previous Black Ops titles.
Fans of Destiny, meanwhile, will be pleased to hear that Destiny 2 is getting an expansion called Forsaken due out on September 4 this year.
For VR, there were two titles announced. One is Trover Saves the Universe, a PS4 and Playstation VR title from Justin Roiland, the co-creator of the animated show Rick and Morty.
The other is Déraciné, a supernatural mystery from FromSoftware, the team behind the Souls series and Bloodborne. – Rappler.com
