MANILA, Philippines – Dating and relationship site OKCupid prepared a strange surprise for its userbase on the Firefox browser on Monday, March 31 (April 1 Philippine time).

Visitors to OKCupid.com using Firefox get an additional screen before entering OKCupid, asking users to switch browsers because of Mozilla’s CEO and a donation he made in 2008. 

The message on their site explains, “Mozilla’s new CEO, Brendan Eich, is an opponent of equal rights for gay couples. We would therefore prefer that our users not use Mozilla software to access OkCupid.”

OkCupid explains that Eich “supported the passage of California’s Prop 8, a statewide initiative to ban gay marriage, with a $1000 donation.” Their message also notes that Eich, via his statements, appears to hold the same views he did back in 2008, when he donated the money.

The site message also notes that “roughly 8%” of the relationships forged on OKCupid have been same-sex relationships. The site message adds, “OkCupid is for creating love. Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure.” (READ: My real-life realizations from online dating sites)

While users can still use Firefox to access the site just by clicking past the message, OkCupid has also gone a step further by providing links to alternative browsers: Google Chrome, Internet Explorer (called Exploder in their message), Opera, and Safari.

In a blog post, Mozilla responded by saying that it “supports equality for all, including marriage equality for LGBT couples. No matter who you are or who you love, everyone deserves the same rights and to be treated equally.”

Mozilla added, “OKcupid never reached out to us to let us know of their intentions, nor to confirm facts.”
