Hello!

Dear Rappler reader,

The week kicked off with President Rodrigo Duterte's State of the Nation Address – where he, true to form, went off-script. Not only did he harangue his critics, but also stepped out of the halls of Batasang Pambansa to address protesters gathered outside and asked them to be more understanding of the difficulty of his role heading the country.

Hearings on high-profile cases continued shortly after both branches of Congress opened. In the House of Representatives, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos, addressing allegations of misusing Ilocos tobacco funds, came face-to-face with her accuser, House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas. In the Senate, the hearing on the reinstatement of Police Superintendent Marvin Marcos, the police officer who led the team implicated in the killing of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr in his Leyte jail cell last year, continued.

For Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, the show must go on – she will continue to probe erring public officials, and that Duterte should not interfere.

Below are the big stories we think you shouldn't miss.
