Typhoon Gardo (Maria) began to make its way to the northern part of Taiwan late Tuesday morning, July 10. It maintained its strength while enhancing the southwest monsoon or hanging habagat, which is affecting Luzon and the Visayas.

Also on Tuesday, rescue workers in Japan carried out house-to-house searches in hopes of finding survivors after deadly floods and landslides claimed at least 141 lives.

In the US, President Donald Trump nominated conservative judge Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. Kavanaugh, who now sits on the US Court of Appeals in Washington, was former advisor to George W. Bush. He began his career as a clerk to retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
