India arrests 5 in Swiss tourist gang rape

Police arrest five men for the rape of a Swiss tourist in central India on Friday. The woman and her husband were on their way to Agra — home of the iconic Taj Mahal — when seven to eight men attacked them while they were camping. Police say the men initially intended to rob the couple, but were disappointed when they found out the tourists only had 10,000 Indian rupees ($185). Several of the men then raped the woman in front of her husband. The attack comes just months after widespread protests against India’s treatment of women, following the gang-rape of a 23-year-old student on a bus in New Delhi in December. According to government crime statistics, one woman is raped every 20 minutes in India. Most incidents are unreported because of the victims’ fear of being stigmatized in the sexually conservative nation.
