#TalkThursday: Innovation and cloud computing in the Asia-Pacific

MANILA, Philippines – Rappler talks to May-Ann Lim and Bernie Trudel of the Asia Cloud Computing Association. Lim is the association’s Executive Director, while Trudel has been its Chairman for the past three years.

If you’re an active netizen, chances are you’ve already experienced being up in the “cloud” in one way or another. Cloud computing generally refers to processes involving computers and individuals all linked together through communication networks like the Internet. The real-time connection makes sharing information, files, and programs possible, without any concrete hardware passing hands. The applications of cloud computing are as varied as simple things like storing photos and videos online or using web-based email services like Gmail, to complicated systems that serve as the backbone of corporate operations. It’s a product of people’s evolving use of technology and the possibilities are near endless.

What does the development of cloud technology mean for individuals and businesses in the Asia-Pacific? How prevalent is cloud computing in this day and age? Will it benefit countries with poor connectivity?

The Asia Cloud Computing Association is a non-profit organization that champions the use of the technology, seeking to accelerate the adoption of cloud computing in the Asia Pacific.

Aside from working with the group, Lim has worked in the fields of development, tech policy and communications across the region, working with a number of institutions like the World Bank, the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, and the Singapore Internet Project.

Trudel will share knowledge gained from 30 years in the ICT industry. He also serves as the Data Center and Chief Technology Officer of Cisco Asia Pacific. In Cisco, he advises organizations on building sustainable network infrastructure for hosting cloud services.
