THAILAND: 2 national parks eyed for ASEAN Heritage Parks

A mystical rainforest and a karst mountain with legendary history are among the national parks being evaluated for inclusion in the list of ASEAN Heritage Parks.

As part of the AHP nomination process, an evaluation team led by Robert Mather, technical assistance team leader of the Biodiversity Conservation and Management of Protected Areas in ASEAN (BCAMP) project, together with two Thai evaluators Dr Dachanee  Emphandhu, and Dr Petch Manopawitr visited Khao Sok and Tham Luang – Khun Nam Nang Non national parks.

BCAMP is an ongoing project being implemented by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) with support from the European Union.

The ASEAN Heritage Parks are protected areas of high conservation importance, preserving in total, a complete spectrum of representative ecosystems in the ASEAN region. These include natural or national parks, nature reserves, cultural sites, and pre-historic sites.

Myanmar Muslim MP-elect vows to be rights champion

After 5 years without a single Muslim MP, Myanmar is in need of someone to help fight for the rights of oppressed minorities, says Sithu Maung as he celebrates his election to parliament.

The 33-year-old was one of just two Muslims out of more than 1,100 candidates for Aung San Suu Kyi’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party – up from zero in the last election in 2015.

Muslims number 4% of the national population and suffer particularly high levels of discrimination.
