JAKARTA, Indonesia – The 10th anniversary of the tsunami and a shocking new case of migrant worker abuse lead our wrap of stories from Indonesia today.

1. Indonesia marks the 10th anniversary of the 2004 tsunami

Thousands of people held a memorial since Thursday, December 25 in Aceh, the epicenter of the Indian Ocean tsunami, as the world prepared to mark a decade since a disaster that took 220,000 lives and laid waste to coastal areas in 14 countries. Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah thanked Indonesians and the international community in his address at the Baiturrahman mosque, one of the few buildings which withstood the wrath of the massive earthquake and ensuing waves which left 170,000 people in the country dead or missing. “Sympathy from Indonesians and the international community has helped (Aceh) to recover,” he said. 2. Indonesian migrant worker tortured, abused by lesbian employers in Malaysia

Merience Kabu, a 32-year-old Indonesian worker from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, was rescued on Saturday after reportedly suffering 8 months of abuse in the hands of her lesbian employers in Malaysia. She allegedly had her teeth pulled out, was kicked and stomped on her face, had a hard object inserted into her genitals, and was imprisoned with her employers’ dog, according to The Malay Mail. “My tongue still hurts because it was clamped with pliers,” she told Tempo.co. The Indonesian embassy has promised to take care of her finances and needs, and said a law firm has already been appointed to help her sue her employers.  

3. Alleged ISIS video threatens Indonesian military, police 

A 20-minute video allegedly produced by the Islamic State (ISIS) that was uploaded in August has recently been making the rounds in Indonesia. The video shows a man supposedly named Salim Mubarok Attamimi a.k.a Abu Jandal Al Yemeni Al Indonesia urging Indonesians to join the jihadist group. The video also attacks the Indonesia Militery (TNI), Indonesia Police (Polri) and Anshor Youth Group (Pemuda Anshor) of Nahdatul Ulama, according to Tempo.co. The video is available here.

4. Two airport security officers accused of raping Chinese national

Soekarna-Hatta International Airport Police have detained two aviation security officials, one aged 26 the other 32, for allegedly raping a Chinese national. Airport Police spokesperson Azhari Kurniawan told Okezone.com the victim arrived at the airport on Saturday, December 20. The two suspects offered to bring her to a nearby hotel, and raped her there.  

5. Jokowi donates a thousand tractors to farmers

During an impromptu visit to Subang, West Java, on Friday, December 26, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo donated 1,000 tractors to farmers and urged them to increase rice production to 2 million tons in 2015. The president added that he will order that damaged irrigation channels be fixed to support the 2-million-ton goal. If the goal is reached, he promised to donate more tractors, according to Detik.com.  – Rappler.com
