President Jokowi breaks his silence on the Papua killings, a popular tourist destination in Solo was burned down, and the latest updates from missing AirAsia flight QZ8501.

1. Solo’s batik market burned down

Pasar Klewer in Solo, the city’s biggest textile market, caught fire on Saturday evening, December 27. The popular destination for local tourists – which sells batik, cotton, and silk – was ripped by fire at around 8 p.m. on Saturday. Witnesses said the fire started at one point in the western part of the market but spread rapidly within hours, burning hundreds of stalls. Klewer Market Traders Association estimate the loss of up to IDR 10 trillion. Solo Mayor FX Hadi Rudyatmo said that the city administration has set up an alternative market for traders. 2. AirAsia plane ‘likely at bottom of sea’

Bambang Sulistyo, the head of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), said he suspected the plane was still intact and sitting at the bottom of the sea. “Based on the coordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea,” he said on Monday morning, the second day of the search.

He added that Basarnas is widening the search area to 7 sectors, up from 4 sectors the previous day. “The additional 3 sectors are in northern Bangka Belitung, Karimata Strait, and in the western part of West Kalimantan,” he said. Read the full Rappler story.

3. Jokowi speaks on Papua killings

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on his first official visit to Indonesia far-western province, said that the shooting of five teenagers in Paniai, Papua is unacceptable and that his administration will set up a fact-finding team to investigate the case.

“I want this case to be solved immediately so it won’t ever happen again in the future,” the president said as quoted by the Jakarta Globe. “By forming a fact-finding team, we hope to obtain valid information [about what actually happened], as well as find the root of the problems.

Jokowi, who is in Papua for Christmas celebrations, also promised that in order to better listen to Papuans’ aspirations, he would visit the province at least three times each year.

4. KPK’s new building ready by 2015

In its 11th anniversary, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) today held a media event topping off its new building. The construction of the new building started in December 2013 and is projected to be finished by end of 2015. The new site is in Jalan Gembira, Kuningan, South Jakarta, only 500 meters from its current location.

In his anniversary speech, KPK chief Abraham Samad said, “The big dream of eradicating corruption won’t be realized without the support of the people. There are a lot of attacks towards the KPK. The solidarity of all KPK employees and the spirit of eradication corruption must not drown.”

5. Government to announce new fuel subsidy policies 

The Indonesian government plans to announce new fuel subsidies on Tuesday, December 30. “Tomorrow on Tuesday, the government will issue a policy regarding the subsidies fuel,” Energy Minister Sudirman Said said as quoted by Detik.com. He added that the options being considered are a fixed subsidy for diesel or eliminating the subsidy for Premium fuel.
