IN PHOTOS: On the run for decades, Interpol-wanted man caught in Bali

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Police on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali said on October 26, they had arrested an Indian gangster wanted back home for offenses linked to organized crime including murders, extortion, smuggling and drug trafficking.

Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, known as Chhota Rajan, was arrested on October 25 at Ngurah Rai airport as he arrived from Australia, said the police chief of Bali’s main city Denpasar, Reinhard Nainggolan. He had been on the run for decades.

“The Interpol notice gave his name as Rajendra Sadshiv Nikalje but his passport carries the name Mohan Kumar,” Nainggolan said. Chhota Rajan has been on the run for more than two decades, he said.

Nikalje was the alleged former right-hand man of Mumbai crime kingpin Dawood Ibrahim, who is suspected of being behind the 1993 bomb blasts in the city that killed more than 250 people.

He was scheduled to be repatriated on Tuesday evening, November 3 to India, and was scheduled to be turned over to Interpol but his trip has been delayed due to the closure of Bali airport because of volcanic ash.
