VIRAL: Satire video by Dutch expat on Indonesian women sparks online fury
The video sparked divided reactions and online conversations about race relations between foreign men and young Indonesian women

JAKARTA, Indonesia – A Facebook video uploaded by a Dutchman describing his love for ayam went viral on Thursday, July 21. In Indonesia, the word ayam literally means chicken but is also informally used as ‘chick’ and is used as a derogatory word for prostitutes.

The video sparked divided reactions and online conversations about race relations between bule (foreign men) and young Indonesian women.

Manuel Gituloh, a Dutch social media personality, is an expat living in Indonesia. He maintains an active Facebook, Instagram and YouTube profile where he uploads satirical videos on Indonesian lifestyle and culture.

Gituloh uploaded the video this week, which captured social media attention, garnering more than 80,000 viewers.

In the video, he plays on the Indonesian word ayam, using it as a pun.

He cradles the chicken and speaks in Bahasa Indonesia, the local language, describing how they met and praises her “very exotic” dark skin.

The video received mixed reactions from netizens as some praised the Dutchman for his witty humor while others slammed him for being sexist and generalizing Indonesian women.

“I understand that the video is a satire but these jokes worsen the stereotypes that are generally held about Indonesian women, who are in a relationship with Western men. It is disturbing,” shared Risyiana Muthia on an Indonesian feminist Facebook group.

“Isn’t that a rooster? Omg! This must be another one of those bad western propaganda to spread the LGBT movement in Indo!! Bahahaha…,” commented another user.

“Some of Indonesian are so blah and can’t accept the truth about those ‘ayam ayam’ in Jakarta but I like the way u exposed it with sense of humor,” another netizen, Olivia Thomas, said.

By Thursday afternoon, Gituloh had taken down the video.

He posted a status update on his Facebook account stating why he decided to take the video down.

“The ‘Bules love ayam’ video has been removed due to the amount of negative responses and misinterpretations. Sorry for any inconvenience caused
