JAKARTA, Indonesia – There is no doubt the internet and social media have become a necessity for most people on a daily basis, whether it be to communicate with someone across the world or to promote and create a business. 
 
But what does the internet and social media landscape look like? We Are Social and Hootsuite teamed up to bring “Digital In 2017 Growth Overview,” a report on the digital statistics and trends for 239 countries around the world to answer that question.


The report said internet usage continues to grow all over the world, with global users up 8% year-on-year. Today, more than half of the world’s population now use the internet – more than 3.75 billion people are online today.
 
Report writer Simon Kemp said well over 1/3 of the word’s population is now using social media every month. 
 
According to the report, Indonesia is the fastest growing country in relation to the number of internet users today compared to 2016. Indonesia is almost 3 times over the global average with a 51% growth year-on-year.  
 
The report also said Indonesia’s fixed internet connection speed is slightly above the global average. 

Social media
 
The average time an Indonesian spends on social media a day is 3 hours and 16 minutes, with the Philippines spending the most at 4 hours and 17 minutes.  
 
As for a year-on-year increase in the number of people using social media, Indonesia is 4th behind India, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. 
 
The report also said mobile social media use is growing faster, with global monthly active users numbers up 30% year-on-year, reaching more than 2.5 billion. Indonesia boasts the 3rd highest growth in that category, up 39% since January 2016.

Facebook, with 1.871 billion active users a month is the leading social platform with active users, followed by Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
 
At 75%, Australia has the largest number of people who own Facebook that are actively using the platform. Only 41% of Facebook users in Indonesia are daily active users. When compared to cities, Jakarta is the 4th city with the largest number of active Facebook users in the world.
 
The country also comes in 4th place when it comes to the country with the largest number of active Facebook users, only behind Brazil, India and the United States.
