Two missing after Spanish fishing boat sinks

MADRID, Spain – Two seamen were missing after a fishing boat sank off Spain’s northern coast in rough weather, the coastguard said Sunday, November 30.

Four of the 6 crew from the Safran fishing boat were plucked to safety by another fishing vessel after it sank some 35 nautical miles (55 kilometers) north of the seaside resort of San Sebastian late on Saturday, the coastguard said in a statement.

“Throughout the night maritime and aerial means from the Spanish and French coastguard looked for the two missing crew members,” the statement added.

The Spanish coast guard deployed two helicopters and two ships to the area while the french coast guard sent a plane and a helicopter.

They were joined by several fishing boats which were in the area when the Safran sank.

The coast guard described weather conditions in the region as “adverse” with strong winds and heavy seas with swells of up to 3 metres (10 feet).

The four rescued crew members are in “good health” and were taken to the town of Santona on Spain’s north coast. – Rappler.com
