MANILA, Philippines – Lupita Nyong’o has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Patsey, an abused plantation worker, in 12 Years A Slave.

This was the first nomination for Lupita. She beat out fellow first-time nominees June Squibb and Sally Hawkins for this award, as well as Hollywood veteran Julia Roberts, and Jennifer Lawrence.

Lawrence was perhaps her strongest competition this year. She had 3 nominations under her belt now, the youngest person to hold this distinction.

In her speech, Nyong’o thanked the film’s cast and production, her family, as well as the Yale School of Drama.

“Thank you so much for putting me in this position it has been the joy of my life… When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

Lupita most recently picked up an Independent Spirit Award, as well as the Critics’ Choice Award, and a Screen Actors Guild award. – Rappler.com
