Doctors and family hope to remove Dolphy from the ICU

MANILA, Philippines – King of comedy Dolphy continues to get better. His doctors and family are considering moving him out of the ICU of Makati Medical Center, hopefully by today, July 3.

Last June 28, Dolphy was cleared of pneumonia and metabolic encepalopathy. His vital signs have gotten better; blood transfusion has been reduced.

His dialysis was halted over the weekend of June 30 so that doctors may observe if his kidneys will continue to get better without it.

“He is lucid. He answers back by nodding his head. He raises his eyebrows. He can lift his hands minimally,” said Dr. Eric Nubla, director of Makati Medical Center’s patient relations department, at last Thursday’s presscon.

“He winces, grimaces, squeezes family members’ hands,” he continued. “He tries to mouth words and tries to smile. These are all good signs.”

Although Dolphy is still unable to speak because of his tracheostomy, he is already able to ask for water and say “I love you” to partner, Zsa Zsa Padilla.

In a text message to ABS-CBN, son Eric Quizon said that they are able to understand what their father is saying through lip reading.

Last June 30, Padilla posted the following tweets:

Former president Joseph Estrada, a close friend of the comedy king, offered mass for his friend last week, saying he is willing to help the family in any way he can.

Padilla’s daughter, singer and actress Karylle Tatlonghari — in an interview for the cover story of Metro magazine’s July issue — admits that “their family kept Dolphy’s condition a secret for years.” – Rappler.com
