Typhoon Chedeng weakens, to hit land Sunday night
(UPDATED) Weather bureau PAGASA warns the public against engaging in outdoor activities along the beaches of eastern Luzon starting Saturday. There will be possible storm surges of up to 3 meters in those areas.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Typhoon Chedeng (Maysak) has weakened further as it moved closer to the Philippines and is now expected to make landfall on Sunday evening, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Thursday evening, April 2.

PAGASA said that as of 4 am on Friday, April 3, the typhoon was located 810 km east of Virac, Catanduanes, moving northwest at 15 km/h.

Chedeng has slowed down, with maximum sustained winds of 165 km/h* near the center and gustiness of up to 200 km/h.

The weather bureau said Chedeng is expected to make landfall over the eastern coast of Aurora-Isabela area by Sunday evening, April 5, and will exit land via Ilocos Sur on Monday morning, April 6.

The typhoon is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility Monday evening.

Moderate to heavy rainfall may be expected within the 150-200 km radius of the typhoon.

With the typhoon weakening as it nears the Philippines, PAGASA said it will possibly raise Public Storm Warning Signal Number 1 over the Bicol region within the next 6 hours.

Sea travel over the area will be suspended once the storm signal is raised.

Although landfall is expected Sunday evening, PAGASA warned the public against engaging in outdoor activities along the beaches of eastern Luzon starting Saturday.

The weather bureau said storm surges and sea surface waves of up to 3 meters may also be expected over the eastern coasts of Quezon, Aurora, and Isabela.

In Baler, Auroraa popular surfing spot, about 10,000 tourists checked in resorts along the bay were advised to leave as early as Friday, April 3.

The next bulletin will be issued at 11 am on Friday. – Rappler.com

(Editor’s note: We earlier reported that Chedeng packs maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h. We regret this error.)
