Kylie Verzosa’s emotional backstage moment before Miss International win
Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa talks about her winning speech – where she 'stumbled a bit' – and explains why she wore a rosary during coronation night

MANILA, Philippines – Anyone who watched Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa give her winning speech on coronation night would have seen her speak calmly and clearly. (READ: Stars cheer on PH’s Kylie Verzosa, the Miss International 2016 winner)

But the newly crowned queen herself thought that her speech wasn’t as good as she wanted it to be.

“Actually, I thought I could have done the final speech better,” said Kylie to the press on November 11. She had just arrived in the Philippines for the first time since her win a few hours before the press conference.

She continued: “It wasn’t as perfect as I wanted it to be. In the middle I stumbled a little bit.

“But that was when I told myself okay na ‘to (this is okay), you know it’s not perfect. Babawiin mo (You’ll make up for it). So I gave it the best that I could.

“And onstage, you don’t know how you’re doing, you don’t know how well you’re performing. You just do the best you can and you’ll see yourself [through] to the end.”

On October 27 at the Tokyo Dome, Kylie, along with 15 other finalists, explained why she should be the next Miss International.

She added while talking about her speech during the press conference, “But during the entire pageant, I did the best I could. If I didn’t win, then I would have still been very proud of myself because I knew I did the best I could.”

Saying a prayer

During the press conference, a reporter asked about a small detail from coronation night – did Kylie wear a white rosary bracelet on purpose while she was being crowned onstage?

Kylie shared: “After the speech, I cried. It was a release of emotions. So I cried backstage and I wanted to pray the whole time – during the pageant I prayed a lot.

“So after the speech, I went backstage, and while everyone was congratulating the girls, I was looking for a rosary. I was looking something to hold, to touch, something very tangible in my hands. So I prayed. I told Him, ‘I gave it everything I could, Ikaw na bahala (It’s up to You).'”

“So ‘di bale na hindi bagay sa gown (So never mind that it didn’t match the gown),” Kylie added later, in a more lighthearted tone. “It was the end of the pageant, so I wore that rosary.”

At the end of the conference, Kylie thanked her friends, family, and supporters, saying: “Thank you so much. You don’t know how much help you’ve given me. You don’t know how much strength you’ve given me for this whole competition. And I do hope you still join me in my reign as Miss International. Still continue the support, still pray for the best, because you are still part of my journey as Miss International.”
