About Isagani de Castro Jr.

Before he joined Rappler as senior desk editor, Gani was the longest-serving editor in chief (EIC) of ABS-CBN News online, the general news website of ABS-CBN Corp.

He served for 11 years as EIC of news.abs-cbn.com, one year of which was when Newsbreak/Public Trust Media Group Inc. managed the media empire’s general news website.

Gani was a contributor to the investigative magazine Newsbreak, and officially joined Newsbreak/Public Trust Media Group in 2008 after working for 20 years as a reporter in the Manila office of Asahi Shimbun, the second largest newspaper in Japan.

He started his journalism career in the now defunct Business Day, and was managing editor of the University of the Philippines’ student organ, Philippine Collegian, in 1983. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in Philosophy from the state university.

He has written chapters in several books, including in Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism’s Saving the Earth: The Philippine Experience, Pork and Other Perks: Corruption and Governance in the Philippines; the Ateneo Center for Social Policy and Public Affairs’ Showdown ’98: The Search for the Centennial President; the UP Third World Studies Center’s Civil Society Making Civil Society; and, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies’ International Relations in Southeast Asia: Between Bilateralism and Multilateralism.
