Rappler stories on Marawi, incest are finalists in prestigious SOPA Awards
Rappler is a finalist in two categories of the Society of Publishers in Asia Awards: 'Excellence in Reporting on Women's Issues' and 'Excellence in Journalistic Innovation'

MANILA, Philippines – Rappler is a finalist in two categories in this year’s Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards for Editorial Excellence.

One is the “Excellence in Journalistic Innovation” category for its Virtual Reality/360 coverage of the Marawi siege.

Marawi in 360,” a two-part mini documentary shot completely in VR, was worked on by journalists Carmela Fonbuena, Adrian Portugal, Jeff Digma, and Natashya Gutierrez. It captures the war from inside the battle zone, and the devastating impact of the conflict on the people of Marawi.

Rappler is also one of the finalists in the awards’ “Excellence in Reporting on Women’s Issues” category.

Gutierrez’s feature “Rape within the family: The Philippines’ silent incest problem“, includes a feature story and a mini-documentary on the prevalence of incest rape in the country.

The other finalist from the Philippines is ABS-CBN News Digital, which is also in the running in two categories. “Healing the wounds from the drug war” is a finalist for the Excellence in Feature Writing category, while “‘Buhay pa kami’: Dispatches from Marawi” is listed for Excellence in Explanatory Reporting.

The winners will be announced at the SOPA Awards Gala Dinner on June 13 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This year, the Hong Kong-based non-for-profit organization Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA), received the highest number of entries since the launch of the awards in 1999. The finalists were shortlisted from more than 850 English and Chinese-language entries submitted by international, regional, and local media across the region.

Now on their 20th year, the awards are widely considered the most prestigious in the Asia Pacific publishing industry and a world-class benchmark of journalistic best practice.

Entries were assessed by a judging panel of more than 100 media professionals, including journalists, editors, and columnists from some of the region’s most influential publications, along with academics from a number of Asia’s leading journalism schools. – Rappler.com
