Now on its 10th year, UP Cinema's Piling Obra video competition continues to be a venue for student filmmakers to show their works

MANILA, Philippines — We are well into a new golden age for Philippine cinema.

Independent filmmakers regularly screen their works at international festivals. Following suit are student filmmakers who use digital to tell the stories about their generation.

On January 11, 2014, fresh films from different universities around the country will vie for this year’s top honors in the University of the Philippines (UP) Cinema’s Piling Obrang Vidyo: Interschool Video Competition.

Now on its 10th year, Piling Obrang Vidyo (POV) is an annual national video competition where aspiring student filmmakers from various universities and colleges get the chance to showcase their finest works. It was established by UP Cinema, a university-wide student film organization based in UP Diliman.

Eligible for the contest are films shot on video and have not been shown in any theater, television or commercial festival. Films for each category must also meet the specified running time: 15 minutes for narrative entries, 7 minutes for experimental entries, and 20 minutes for documentary entries.

Finalists per category were screened by a Selection Committee composed of UP Cinema members and an independent judging body. These finalists will compete for several awards including best film from each category, Viewer’s Choice Award, The Cinemaster’s Choice, and citations in the Narrative category for: Best Direction, Best Production Design, Best Performance, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Editing, and Best Music/Original Score.

The 10th Piling Obrang Vidyo will be held on Saturday, January 11 at the UP Cine Adarna Theater, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. Finalists will be screened at 1 pm, with the awards ceremony following thereafter.
