MANILA, Philippines – Mobile phone firms Smart Communications and Globe Telecom are now taking orders for iPhone 4S, the latest smartphone of Apple Inc.

Smart and Globe have started receiving online reservations from postpaid clients through their websites. Units are available starting December 16.

Sun Cellular subscribers, on the other hand, will soon have access to the fifth generation iPhone, according to Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) chairman Manuel Pangilinan.

Sun and Smart are now both under PLDT, which recently entered into a share-swap deal with the Gokongwei family who controlled Sun’s parent firm Digital Telecom.

The PLDT group is banking on the new iPhone unit to corner the profitable postpaid market.

“When this happens, this will make us the undisputed leader in postpaid subscriptions,” said PLDT board member and TV5 president Ray Espinosa.

In the Philippines, Globe exclusively offered iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 to its postpaid clients in the Philippines.

But worldwide, Apple is doing away with exclusivity deals so more operators can offer the product.
