Nurses are no longer in demand, accountants and engineers are

MANILA, Philippines – Gone are the days when nursing was the most coveted job here and abroad.

The huge demand for nurses we’ve seen in the past has reversed, and the Commission on Higher Education is now trying to arrest the oversupply of nursing graduates in the country by closing down schools and imposing a moratorium on new programs, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).

Now, if you want a profession that’s in demand, try accounting or engineering.

In his latest “Beyond the Numbers” report, NSCB Secretary General Jose Ramon Albert said there are many vacancies for these two professions, but they are hard to fill.

Why? “These vacancies require specific technical requirements and most of which necessitate the passing of an eligibility exam,” said Albert.

Sometimes, he said companies cannot fill these positions because applicants expect huge salaries or lack years of experience.

Here are the top 10 in-demand jobs in the country:

  1. Accountants and auditors
  2. Electronics and Communication Engineers
  3. Systems Analysts and Designers
  4. Mechanical Engineers
  5. Electrical Engineers
  6. Industrial Engineers
  7. Medical Technologists
  8. Pharmacists
  9. Teaching Professionals for the handicapped and disabled
  10. Chemical engineers
