MANILA, Philippines – The movie Sunday Beauty Queen won Best Picture at this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival Gabi ng Parangal held on Thursday, December 29 at the Kia Theatre.

Paolo Ballesteros won the Best Actor award for the movie Die Beautiful, while Erik Matti won Best Director for the movie Seklusyon.

This year’s festival was very different due to a number of changes, which include new Executive Committee members and changes to the festival submission rules and critiera. (READ: MMFF 2016 revamped: 10 important changes to know)

Despite the usual contenders not making it to the lineup, the MMFF has announced that they hit their target ticket sales on the first day of the festival. The MMFF also has a shorter run this year compared to previous years – it started on December 25 and is set to end on January 3. (READ: MMFF 2016 films face looming challenge to remain in theaters)
