Richard Gomez on Bench ‘Naked Truth’ issue: No need to say sorry
The actor, a long-time endorser of the brand, says that the issue shouldn't be a big deal
MANILA, Philippines – Long-time Bench endorser and actor Richard Gomez has given his take on the controversy surrounding the recent Bench fashion show.

In an interview with reporters during the press conference for the movie The Janitor, Wednesday October 1, Richard said he did not see anything wrong with the concept of The Naked Truth.

“Well, Bench fashion show – it’s a show. Wala naman doon na totoo kung hindi yung mga tao na naglalakad. Lahat eto kathang isip, so yung mga lumalabas na isyung ito, this is my opinion – alam naman natin na malapit na ang eleksyon so yung mga party list groups sila yung mga naghahanap ng issues, ganun kasimple lang iyon,” he said.

(Nothing there is real, except those who walked on stage. All of these are purely of the imagination, so the issues that came out –this is my opinion – we all know that the election is fast approaching, so the party list groups, they are the ones looking for issues. Simple as that.)

Papaano kung yung lalaki ang tinali natin, meron bang rightist group para sa mga lalaki? Wala, it’s a show – it is a show, a circus, a movie ‘di ba?” he added.

(What if the guy was the one on the leash, is there a rightist group for men?)

The actor, who previously particpated in the past fashion shows, said that there are other matters to focus on. He added that the brand has been good not only to the stars, but also to the consumers.

“Bench is a good brand. It has been a helpful to a lot of people. Bench is one of the biggest in the fashion industry. Bench has been doing this for us.”

As for his take on whether actor Coco Martin and the company should have apologized, Richard said: “ Dapat hindi siya mag-sorry. Wala dapat mag-sorry. Maraming mga importanteng bagay na dapat bigyan ng focus.

(He should have not said sorry. Nobody needs to say sorry. There are other matters to focus on.)

Held last September 20 at the Mall of Asia Arena, The Naked Truth became controversial after photos of actor Coco Martin showing him walking with a girl on the leash became the hot topic online.

The act was condemned by party-list group Gabriela and Sen. Pia Cayetano, among others, as being degrading to women. (READ: Bench issues apology for ‘offensive elements’ of ‘Naked Truth’ underwear show)

The company issued an apology, but this was later removed. Following the controversy, Bench founder Ben Chan posted on his Instagram account a personal message apologizing to those who were offended, and to Coco, who was dragged in the issue.

Coco meanwhile has also issued his statement, apologizing to those who did not like what he did. He also promised to be more responsible and sensitive especially when it comes to women’s issues. –
