MANILA, Philippines – Former beauty queen contestant and Darna actress Anjanette Abayari is back in the country, 15 years after her involvement in a drug case in Guam barred her from returning to the Philippines.

In an episode of Startalk on Saturday, February 21, she said, “Actually, dumating pa ako nung 31st pa, sa Iloilo, tsaka kasi Iloilo kasi meron kaming family reunion. So I was there for a week and a half bago ako pumunta ng Maynila. And I came here pa [sa Maynila] nung before Valentine’s.”

(Actually, I arrived on [January] 31. I was in Iloilo, because we had a family reunion. So I stayed there for a week and a half before I flew to Manila. I was here [in Manila] before Valentine’s Day.)

The past

Anjanette’s most notable role in the ’90s was playing the titular female Pinoy superhero Darna in 1994. Before that, she also won the title of Bb Pilipinas Universe-Philippines in 1991, but the title was removed due to citizenship issues.

In 1999, Anjanette was arrested for possession of “shabu” at an airport in Guam. During a routine security check at immigration, traces of the drug in a broken plastic tube were found in her makeup bag.

Anjanette flew to Guam from Manila to appear at a karaoke lounge there. After the shabu was found, she was placed on the immigration bureau’s blacklist, which therefore banned her from re-entering the Philippines.

David Bunevacz

When asked about her ex-boyfriend, David Bunevacz, she said that he sold her property without her knowledge.

“Well ‘yung pinakamalaking sanang gusto niyang ibenta [was] ‘yung condo ko. Pinadalhan niya ako ng power of attorney, akala niya isa-sign ko or something. Tapos pero of course, I didn’t. And nalaman ko nalang sa huli na ‘yung kotse ko at yung Rolex ko [ay binenta].”

(Well, the biggest thing he [David] wanted to sell was my condo unit. He sent over a document, the power of attorney, and he thought I was going to sign it off or something. But of course, I did not do so. And in the end, my car and my Rolex [watch were sold].)

She said her uncle recovered her car, but not the watch.

She also shared that some people tried to help her out by donating money during Anjanette’s ongoing case. While she thanked those who helped, she said she didn’t receive any of the donations.

David Bunevacz reportedly received all the donations for Anjanette, but she implied that the donations never reached her.

Check out Anjanette’s crowning moment during the Bb Pilipinas pageant in 1991:

“Thank you pala sa lahat ng tumulong sa akin nun kasi I didn’t get any of the money, so hindi ko alam na maraming tumulong sa akin.”

(Thank you to everyone who helped me before because I didn’t get any of the money, so I didn’t know that a lot of people helped me.)

Dra. Vicki Belo also reportedly gave the donation to Bunevacz, but Anjanette said that she didn’t receive that as well. “I didn’t know that [Dra. Vicki Belo donated].”

Lahat ng nagbigay sa kanya ng tulong para sa akin, hindi niya binigay sa akin – hindi nakarating sa akin. Pati nga ‘yung abogado sa Guam, hindi niya binayaran eh.”

(All the help that was given to David for me, he didn’t give to me – the help didn’t reach me. He didn’t even pay for the lawyer in Guam.)

David Bunevacz is currently married to former talent manager Jessica Rodriguez.

Plans and the future

She shared with Startalk some of her plans, which included an international film, which according to her, will be shot here.

“One month talaga ako dito [sa Pilipinas], tapos babalik ulit ako [sa States], tapos babalik ako ulit [sa Pilipinas] kasi may offers nga. May isa pang gagawin akong international na film – they’re gonna shoot it here eh.”

(I’m really only staying for one more month [in the Philippines], then I return [to the States], then I return here again, because there are offers. I’m also shooting for an international film – they’re [the film company] going to shoot scenes here.)

In a previous interview with DZMM, Anjanette said that she is open to doing local projects.

Anjanette presently has two children. She, however, does not have any plans on getting married. She will be leaving the country for the States on the first week of March.

According to the Philippine Star, Anjanette’s ban from re-entering the Philippines was lifted in 2003, following a 3-year probation rule due to her drug case. Anjanette’s request to be removed from the blacklist was approved by Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Andrea Domingo.  – Rappler.com
