Charice Pempengco: Stop comparing me to Ariana Grande
Charice discusses this in a caption accompanying an Instagram screenshot of a Facebook post asking fans, 'Who sang it better?' and using an old photo of Charice

MANILA, Philippines – Singer Charice Pempengco is not amused by people comparing her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” to Ariana Grande’s version, which recently went viral online. Moreover, she’s standing up for herself when it comes to those who seem to be comparing not only their voices, but their looks.

Charice posted a screenshot of a Facebook post showing a photo stitch of her and Ariana, asking “Who sang it better?”.

“Please. Tigilan nyo na ako with your “comparisons” with other artists. Magaling ang version ni Ariana. Pinakamagaling ang version ni Whitney. Walang nakaka-angat dahil iba iba kaming mga mang-aawit,” Charice wrote in the accompanying caption.

(Please, stop with your comparisons with other artists. Ariana’s version is very good. Whitney’s version is the best. No one is better than the other because we are different kinds of singers.)

“Kaya hindi maka-move on ang madlang people dahil kayo mismo ang ayaw mag-move on at irespeto ang desisyon ng isang tao. I’ve had it. Una sa lahat, napakalayo ng itsura ko kay Ariana, KAYA BA KAILANGANG PALITAN ANG PICTURE KO? Para makisabay? Malayo pa rin. Maganda si Ariana. Sobrang nakaka-offend. But I guess yun yung point niyo diba? Ma-offend ako

(The reason why people cannot move on is because you, yourselves cannot move on and respect the decision of one person. I had it. First of all, my look is very different from Ariana’s. Do you have to change my picture? It’s so different. Ariana is beautiful. It’s very offensive. But I guess that is the point, right? So I will be offended.)

“Alam kong iba iba nag-hahandle ng account na to. Pero nagtataka lang ako kung bakit every time pagdating sa akin, kung hindi comparison, negative at kakaunti lang ang positive. Kaya iba rin ang tingin sa akin ng ibang tao.

(I know many people handle this account. But I am always puzzled as to why every time it comes to me, if it’s not a comparison, it’s mostly negative, or just a bit positive. That’s why people look at me differently.)

Pero on the brighter side, si Ariana yan. Ariana did an amazing job. THERE’S YOUR ANSWER. Wala ng magtatanong sa akin. This is your answer and I’m not mad, just a little offended. I’m cool baka isipin ng iba naman, masama ugali ko kasi na “offend” lang ako. God bless and sana puro peace na lang and move on din pag may time. Walang bumabata. Tumatanda na tayong lahat.”

(But on the brighter side, that’s Ariana. Ariana did an amazing job. There’s your answer. You don’t have to ask anything from me. This is your answer and I’m not mad, just a little offended. I’m cool, people might think I have a bad attitude because I was offended. God bless and peace and move on if there is time. No one is getting younger. We are all getting older.)

After posting her sentiments, Charice shared a new photo of her.

Ayan po new photo ko po. Para sa inyong lahat. Sa mga mapagmahal kong fans. Ayan na po si Charice. Hindi po yung nakita nyo kanina. Thank you for all the love and support.

(Here is my new photo. This is all for you. For my loving fans. This is Charice. Not the one you saw a while ago.)

“I’m venting a little because it’s been hard to show people that I’m not as bad as what other people think, but some people really try to manipulate people to dislike me more. Whoever you choose to believe, I believe in me and who I am today and I am happy with what I’ve been through, good or bad! Mabuhay tayong lahat!,” she wrote.

On April 8, Ariana performed “I Have Nothing” during her concert with David Foster, who also mentored Charice. David also played the piano when Charice performed Whitney’s song years back.

Charice recently visited David in Singapore. David is one of the judges of the ongoing Asia’s Got Talent.–
