'My hair is a part of who I am but it does not define my worth,' says The Juans' Carl Guevarra

The Juans vocalist Carl Guevarra revealed on Sunday, June 20 that he has alopecia areata, a condition which results in hair loss.

“To raise awareness and remove the stigma around it,” Guevarra shared photos on Twitter of his bald patch while receiving an injection.

Further explaining his condition, he wrote, “ALOPECIA AREATA is an autoimmune condition where my immune system attacks my own hair follicles. Several factors affect it and there is no known cure apart from anti-inflammatory modulators through steroids.”

Guevarra also opened up about the physical, mental, and psychological struggles of having alopecia, and urged the public to treat those who are going through it with kindness.

“No one probably loves bald patches, but you are lovable even with these patches. My hair is a part of who I am but it does not define my worth.”

He added, “More than the physical effect, the mental exhaustion and psychological trauma greatly affects patients with this condition. For we do not know when it will appear or go away. So please be kind to those who are going through it.”

The singer disclosed that he was first diagnosed with alopecia in 2016 and it recurred in September 2020. “Not only are injections painful, the overall treatments (creams, topical meds, diet requirements) are hella expensive,” he pointed out.

Despite his condition, Guevarra remains optimistic and hopeful. He also reminded his alopecia-stricken followers that they are not alone.

“I will let you know guys once I’m fully healed. But regardless, life goes on, I’m going to keep doing what God has called me to do. If you have alopecia areata, I see you, I feel you, you’re not alone, and we hope together for healing,” he said.

The Juans is a five-piece Filipino pop band. They are known for their hits “Hindi Tayo Pwede,” “Hatid,” and “Pangalawang Bitaw.” – Rappler.com
