Carly Rae Jepsen marked the 10th anniversary of her breakthrough hit “Call Me Maybe” on September 20, with a post looking back on how the song changed her life.

On social media, the singer shared that before the song’s release, she had been waitressing and overheard people talking about her music. The group of about 12 people had come home from a camping trip in Carly’s native Canada, and had heard her song “Tug of War” on the radio.

“A direct quote I overheard was something like ‘This girl Carly Rae Jepsen was on repeat over and over our whole trip and we are so sick of it,’” she shared. “Some of them sang the song in a mocking voice, oblivious to the fact that I was serving them food.”

She continued to wait on the group, hoping not to be recognized – “But then something warm in my belly began to make me feel giddy because this was the first time I had heard someone else know my name or my music,” she said.

Before the group left, Carly signed their receipt. “Their jaws dropped, we had a laugh, and I may have received a slightly bigger tip than usual,” she said.

A few months after that, on September 20, 2011, “Call Me Maybe” was released as the lead single on Carly’s EP Curiosity. It was later included in her 2012 international debut album Kiss

The song – an upbeat bubblegum-pop track about the rush of meeting someone new – went viral at the time of its international release, and was played on repeat on radio stations and music channels. It was nominated for two Grammys  – Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance – in 2013. It has also inspired a number of lip-sync videos, parodies, covers, and remixes.

“The point is, don’t give up on your dreams, kids,” Carly said.

She went on to thank her listeners, saying “You have opened my world and my heart with this adventure of a song and I could not be more grateful to you all.” She also thanked her co-writers, Josh Ramsay and Tavish Crowe, for helping her with the song.

“When lightning strikes feel lucky and grateful. I know I do every single day!” she said.

She also shared “Future, present, and past” versions of the “Call Me Maybe” cover.

Carly had her start performing in small establishments in Vancouver, before joining reality singing competition Canadian Idol in 2007, where she placed in third. She released her debut studio album Tug of War in 2008, and shot to mainstream fame after the success of “Call Me Maybe.”

Since then, she’s released several more albums, including her 2015 masterwork Emotion, 2019’s Dedicated, and their respective Side B albums.– Rappler.com
