7 moments from ‘Game of Thrones’ season 7 that shook us to our core
From the mass murder of an entire house, to dragon-filled battle scenes, these are the season 7 moments we won't soon forget

MANILA, Philippines – The current season of Game of Thrones is almost at an end, leaving the show’s fans dreading the Thrones-less days that are now right around the corner. Before the season ends (with the show’s longest episode ever!) we look back on some of its most explosive, most memorable moments. (Warning: this article is dark and full of spoilers).

Winter comes for House Frey

Season 7 was off to a satisfying, bloody start, opening with the annihilation of the entire House Frey at the nimble, murderous hands of Arya Stark – wearing the face of Walder Frey, no less. Placing poison in the Freys’ cups, Arya, as Walder, leads a toast, referencing the infamous Red Wedding for which she is taking revenge. Before they even realize it, the Freys fall to their deaths as Arya reveals her face and tells a servant girl: “When people ask you what happened here, tell them the North remembers. Tell them winter came for House Frey” – a line that had audiences everywhere slow-clapping proudly with tears in their eyes.

Dany and Jon finally meet

Prior to this season, everyone’s favorite characters pretty much stuck to their own corners of the world. But with Danenerys Targaryen finally landing in Westeros at the end of last season, people began to anticipate the meeting of the Dragon Queen and the King in the North – two of the show’s biggest fan favorites. Their first encounter was more prickly than Dany-Jon shippers hoped, and Jon Snow’s refusal to bend the knee has created considerable tension in their relationship (as well as birthed a million top-quality memes). As the season wore on though, the two warm up to each other and are even getting flirty – though we’re not sure how they’ll feel when they find out they’re actually related (if the R+L = J theory is outright confirmed, Jon is technically Dany’s nephew).

Missandei and Grey Worm get it on

Daenerys’ military head and translator/BFF have been making eyes at each other pretty much since the day they met. We don’t know why it took them so long to finally admit their feelings for each other, but it finally happened anyway – the night before Grey Worm sailed off on a potentially deadly mission. Their goodbye scene was tender, emotionally charged, and undeniaby sexy – leaving audiences everywhere rooting for the couple, and fearing for their fate on the show.

Cersei is pregnant (or so she says)

Just when we thought we’d see the Cersei’s vise-like grip on her brother/lover loosen, she reels him back in with news that she is carrying his child. Jaime reacts with shock and then love, while viewers were left trying to figure out Cersei’s schemes while picking their jaws up off the floor. After all, if the idea of an incest baby doesn’t shock you, nothing will.

Daenerys exterminates the Lannister army

For a brief time, the Lannister army seemed unstoppable. With the help of Euron Greyjoy’s fleet, they eliminated the Targaryen navy, and wiped out House Tyrell while seizing their wealth. But it only took one dragon to take the entire army down – and the battle scene was perhaps the most glorious – and expensive – in Game of Thrones history. What made this battle extra-stressful was the fact that several fan favorites were fighting on opposing sides. The battle ended on an especially taxing note, when Jaime attempts to kill Daenerys, Drogon fires at Jaime, Bronn pushes him into a lake, they sink, and Tyrion witnesses everything from afar. The quick sequence of events subjected viewers to a million emotions in the span of a minute.

Gendry returns

For the last three seasons, Gendry seemed to have disappeared from the face of the earth after Davos put him on a boat to nowhere to save him from being a human sacrifice. His unceremonial absence has left many fans feelng empty, and even birthed a Gendry rowing meme – which Davos so slyly references in the season 7 episode when Gendry finally reappears. The bastard of Baratheon wasted no time in resettling himself in people’s hearts: within the same episode of his return, he kills two Lannister soldiers, starts a bromance with Jon Snow, and signs up for a dangerous white-walker-catching mission without a second thought. In the penultimate episode, he proves instrumental to everyone’s survival as he races back to the wall to send for help as white walkers close in on his comrades.

Viserion dies (and becomes an ice dragon)

All the loopholes in the previous Thrones episode do not take away from its shock factor, especially because one of its final scenes features the death of one of Daenerys’ dragons, Viserion – speared with an icicle by the Night King himself. When Viserion’s corpse crashes into the frozen lake – and Jon Snow & Co. neglect to fish him out and burn him, what happened next became pretty obvious. Still, the sight of Viserion’s eyes turning into a cold White Walker-blue left fans in a sweat as cold as a northern Winter. We can imagine how hard it’ll be to take an ice dragon down.
