Emotional Vice Ganda remembers late grandfather

MANILA, Philippines –  Comedian Vice Ganda was emotional as he fondly remembered his grandfather Gonzalo Dacumos, who died on Christmas Day.

Vice spoke about his grandfather Saturday, December 27, in a speech that aired on The Buzz. Vice tried to keep it light, but ended up crying.

“Nakakatuwa nga kasi bago siya umalis, he made sure I was number one this year sa Metro Manila Film Fest. Nanood muna siya ng film fest bago siya umalis. Namatay siya after ng last full show. Mahal na mahal ako niyan. Siya lang ang nagmamahal sa akin nang totoo na hindi ko pagdududahan,” Vice said.

(It is heartwarming that before he died, he made sure I was number one in this year’s Metro Manila Film Fest. He watched the film fest first before he passed away. He died after the last full show. He really loves me dearly. I don’t doubt his love for me.)

Vice was referring to his Metro Manila Film Festival entry The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin 2, which is one of the top movies in the box office at this year’s film festival. (READ:[MMFF 2014] ‘Praybeyt Benjamin 2′ Review: Show me the money)

Lolo Gonzalo was a father figure for Vice and his siblings when their mom had to leave to work abroad. 

Vice even recalled how his Lolo would take make sure that they had gifts, acting like Santa Claus. At this point, Vice could not hold back his tears. 

“Lahat may laman ang medyas. Kasi hindi papayag si Santa Claus na may batang malulungkot pag-Pasko, lalo na kung yung batang iyon ay apo niya.”

(Everyone’s stockings had a little something. Because Santa Claus would not allow any kid to be sad on Christmas, especially if that kid is his grandchild.)

“I am so sad right now because Santa died on Christmas Day,” Vice cried.

“Hindi ko alam kung naririnig niyo pa ako or nakikita niyo pa ako. Kung naririnig at nakikita niyo pa ako, ibig sabihin nakakakita kayo ng multo kasi hindi ko alam kung buhay pa ako ngayon. Hindi ako sigurado. Paano ako magiging buhay, patay na ‘yung puso ko? Ang alam lang ng utak ko, patay na ‘yung lolo ko,” he said.

(I do not know if you can hear me or still see me. If you can hear or see me, it means you are seeing a ghost, because I do not if I am still alive. I am not sure. How can I be alive, when my heart is dead.? What my mind knows is that my grandfather is gone.)

In an interview on The Buzz last Sunday, December 21, Vice said that his grandfather was going through renal and respiratory failure. Lolo Gonzalo was 93 when he died. 

Celebrity friends like Pokwang and singer Erik Santos visited the wake, while Vice’s good friend Kris Aquino made her way there after hosting the MMFF 2014 awards night.
