George Clooney at Golden Globes 2015: ‘We will not walk in fear’

MANILA, Philippines – George Clooney received the Cecil B. DeMille award at this year’s Golden Globes. After he accepted the award, he discussed the importance of free speech, seizing the moment, and standing in solidarity with Paris in light of the Charlie Hebdo killings.

“Just one last thing I would say is just to reiterate what we have all been talking about — today was an extraordinary day. There were millions of people that marched, not just in Paris but around the world,” said George at the end of his speech, referring to demonstrations by people uniting against terrorism Sunday, January 11.

“And they were Christians and Jews and Muslims. They were leaders of countries all over the world and they didn’t march in protest. They marched in support of the idea that we will not walk in fear. We won’t do it. So, ‘Je Suis Charlie.’ Thank you.”

George also sported a #JeSuisCharlie button on his tux in light of the Charlie Hebdo tragedy, as did wife Amal on her Dior dress.

There were also, of course, sweet words for new wife Amal Alamuddin.

“It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love,” he said. “Even better when you’ve been waiting your whole life, and when your whole life is 53 years…” He locked eyes with his wife. “I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband.” The camera shifted to a smiling Amal.

The couple recently wed in a private event in Venice on September 27, 2014. The city was chosen as their wedding venue as it was the place where they first met.

Clooney talked about a great year he’s had, and even joked, “And I’m not talking about the fabulous reviews of Monuments Men.” He then moved on to more serious issues, as he shed light on the nature of awards shows and honored those who passed away.

“If you are in this room you’ve caught the brass ring,” he said. “You get to do what you’ve always dreamed to do and be celebrated for it.”

Julianna Margulies and Don Cheadle presented the award to George this year. Before they called him up on stage, they debated over who was the better friend. Julianna asked him, “Did he ever ask you to tour a disaster area with him?” to which Don replied, “Yeah, I went to the set of Monuments Men.” (Monuments Men generally didn’t receive favorable reviews.)

He later joked, “I did not write that joke myself.”
