The spin-off series, which will be written by Shonda Rhimes, will tell the origin story of a young Queen Charlotte

Netflix has confirmed that a Bridgerton spin-off series on the origin story of a young Queen Charlotte is officially underway.

According to a Variety report, Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy) will be writing and executive producing for the new show, alongside Betsy Beers and Tom Verica.

“All Hail The Queen! Thrilled to announce we’re expanding the Bridgerton universe with a limited series that will tell Queen Charlotte’s origin story,” Netflix announced via Twitter on Saturday, May 15.

“The series will also feature young Violet Bridgerton and young Lady Danbury,” they added. The limited series will also tell the backstories of a young Violet Bridgerton, the mother of the eight Bridgerton siblings; and Lady Danbury, The Duke’s mentor.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton,” Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s head of global TV said in a statement.

“Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love,” she added.

Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was married to King George III. After nearly a six-decade rule, she died in 1818 at age 74. She was played by Golda Rosheuvel in the first season of Bridgerton.

Bridgerton premiered on Netflix in December 2020. Netflix renewed the hit period romance series for a second season in January 2021. In April, breakout star RegĂ©-Jean Page, who played the Duke of Hastings in the first season, bowed out of the show. In the same month, Netflix announced that a third and fourth season were in order.

The series is based on Julia Quinn’s novel, The Duke and I, the first of eight in a series. – Rappler.com
