MANILA, Philippines – The Continent has a new Witcher! Netflix announced on Sunday, October 30, that Henry Cavill will exit the hit fantasy series The Witcher after the third season, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the lead role of Geralt of Rivia.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season four,” Cavill wrote in an Instagram post.
He then disclosed that Hemsworth will be the one replacing him, saying that he’s enthusiastic to see “Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”
“Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find,” he added.
Hemsworth, who confessed to being a Witcher fan himself, paid tribute to Cavill and his version of the character. “I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” he wrote.
“Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m [honored] that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,” he continued. “I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into the Witcher world.”
Based on the book series of the same name by Andzrej Sapkowsi, The Witcher follows a monster hunter and mercenary named Geralt, the titular Witcher who hunts down monsters, a powerful sorceress named Yennefer, and a young princess named Ciri whose stories unfold across three separate timelines.
The series adaptation on Netflix premiered in December 2019. Its third season – Cavill’s last, is set to premiere in 2023, but a final release date has yet to be announced.
Cavill’s exit in The Witcher came almost a week after it was confirmed that he’ll be returning to the role of Superman.
Hemsworth is best known for his role as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games franchise. He also appeared in films The Last Song, Independence Day: Resurgence, and the forthcoming Poker Face. – Rappler.com
