Filipino costume designer Clint Ramos wins Tony award for ‘Eclipsed’

MANILA, Philippines – Cebu-born designer Clint Ramos won the Tony award for the Costume Design category on Sunday, June 12 at the Beacon Theater. (FULL LIST: Winners, Tony Awards 2016)

In his speech after receiving the award, the New York-based designer thanked the whole cast of Eclipsed and gave a special mention to his husband.

“I want to thank my husband. I was such a blur up there, that I completely forgot. Jason I love you so very much. And I also want to thank my associates and assistants, the public theater, our producers Stephen Byrd, Alia Jones – just everybody. I just want to thank everybody,” Ramos said. 



After the Tonys, Clint took to Facebook to thank his colleagues, friends, family, and mentors. 


Ramos also posted a photo of himself with his award captioned: “Hi. Thank you.”

His biography lists a number of awards, including the Ani ng Dangal presidential medal for dramatic arts from the President of the Philippines. He is a board member of FIERCE NY, an organization dedicated to developing leadership and power among the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) youth of color.

Aside from Eclipsed, Ramos has also designed for the productions of Violet, The Elephant Man, Barbecue, The Good Person of Szechuan, Appropriate, Angels in America, Here Lies Love, and more.

According to the Inquirer, Ramos was born and raised in Cebu. He took up Theater Arts at the University of the Philippines, where created designs for Dulaang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas. He holds a Master’s of Fine Arts from New York University. –
