MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang has ordered the participation of government agencies, local government units, and corporations in the biggest earthquake drill in Metro Manila.

Dubbed #MMshakedrill on social media, the exercise will be conducted across the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday, July 30, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.

Memorandum Circular No. 79, signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, urges all heads of government offices and corporations “to authorize and encourage their respective officials and employees to participate in the synchronized Metro Manila-wide earthquake drill.”

The memorandum noted that the heads can exempt their officials and employees who are part of the drill from observing office hours and performing their duties.

Malacanang also encouraged the business sector in Metro Manila to join the massive drill led by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

All 17 local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila will participate in the drill, which hopes to prepare residents in the metropolis for the “Big One” – a 7.2-magnitude earthquake – predicted to hit Metro Manila.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said it will participate in the drill by activating the National Disaster Response Cluster at the Camp Aguinaldo Grandstand.

According to MMDA, the drill seeks to foster a culture of preparedness among residents in Metro Manila in the event of a 7.2-magnitude earthquake due to the movement of the West Valley Fault. (READ: All you need to know about preparing for earthquakes)

During the drill, government and private sector earthquake activities will be plotted on MovePH‘s Project Agos Alert Map, which has incorporated the MMDA’s hazard maps for Metro Manila.
