MANILA, Philippines – These Metropolitan Manila Development Authority  (MMDA) officers are dancing for a worthwhile cause: to raise awareness on the Metro Manila earthquake drill happening on Wednesday, June 22.

The second quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill will also take place at the same date and time. (READ: #Pagyanig: NDRRMC holds nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill)

These earthquake drills seek to test the effectivity of existing government response plans in case the West Valley Fault moves, a scenario which scientists predict could happen within our lifetimes. According to the Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study (MMEIRS) conducted by Phivolcs, the Metropolitan Development Authority (MMDA), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 2010, the disaster could also result in an estimated 33,500 casualties and 113,600 wounded.

This year, in accordance with the updated plan, Oplan Metro Yakal Plus, the response plans and capabilities of nearby regions and provinces will also be tested.

As of posting, the video garnered more than 6,000 reactions and at least 5,700 shares. The MMDA also challenged Top Gear Philippines and James Hernandez Deakin, popular social media accounts that regularly discuss public transportation in Metro Manila, to do the MMShake dance.
